Catia (Computer Aided Three- dimensional Interactive Application ) is a leading design software provided by Dassault Systems , a french based soft ware company . It is a complete 3D pruduct life cycle management software which supports the development of a product through all its stages . Catia is written in c++ programming language and competes in CAD/CAM/CAE market with the other leading softwares such as ProE , Solid Edge etc
At present Catia is being used by thousands of automobile companies , aerospace companies and other industries which includes Boeing , Airbus , General Dynamics Electric boat etc .
Versions of Catia
Catia V3, the earlier version of Catia wroks on mainframe platform .
The Catia versions used now a days are Catia v4 , Catia v5 and Catia v6 .Catia v4 was published in 1993 which worked in Unix ,IBM MVS and VM/CMS mainframe platforms . The latest release of Catia v4 , Catia V4 R25 was released on January 2007 .Catia v5 was released in 1998 which were supported by both Unix and Windows operating system .The latest release of Catia v5 , Catia v5 R21 was released on February 2010 .The latest version of Catia , the Catia V6 was announced and released in the year 2008 .

Infrastructure of the soft ware
The basic concept of 3D modeling is same in catia as other design soft wares . But the soft ware infrastructure is different from others in a sense that it is much more organised than others . It follows a work bench based system . In industries we use different benches for different operation such as welding , machining , painting etc . Each bench will have tools related to that specific operation . For example welding bench will have the electric supply for welding , the mask etc . Just like this in Catia we have different work benches for different operation . Each work benches will contain tools only which is useful for that operation . This makes it easy to understand the tools .
